But is it "Art"???

Hey all.

So here's the deali-o. Early this morning, I called the Institute of Puerto Rican Art & Culture. I wanted to register myself for the upcoming Fiestas de las Calles de San Sebastián, possibly the biggest festival to be celebrated in the island where artisans gather and sell their works, musicians play their jams, drunkards do their thing, etc, etc. I myself have always enjoyed going to see what other artists are doing and, of course, supporting the industry by buying a visual treat.

I had the pleasure of speaking with a fellow painter who happened to be the Director for all artists participating in this event. He told me that the main plaza was all booked up, and I told him I wouldn't mind squeezing into a corner since what I had left was a limited collection of works that I wanted to profit from.
The man asked what would I be selling and I told him "a couple of pastel drawings, few paintings, and a series of high quality prints". I think a bit of his vomit went through the phone line as I mentioned that last bit.."high quality prints".

"High quality prints??"

"Yes, Sir. 'Gicleé' prints"

He scoffed, "Prints are an insult to artists everywhere".

...

....

.....

......

.......

You can more or less imagine my shock after hearing him be genuinely insulted by the idea of prints. The man basically believes in ONLY having originals to sell at x amount of money (and I assure you, not an affordable price at all), WITHOUT prints of whatever original you might have sold that could have been liked by others who couldn't afford said original piece.

So...posters, digital art, all that shit doesn't merit respect in the art world? Well pardon me but that just seems like a big pile of megasaur BULLSHIT.

Prints are an excellent way to reach the WHOLE market. Young people starting to take an interest in the arts who may not have the monetary convenience as others can purchase your art. IT'S A GREAT WAY TO MARKET YOUR WORK AND YOURSELF.

And second, IT'S A FESTIVAL. Not a high-end gallery in, say, New York City.

It really got me to the core. It's a very unjust mentality coming from someone who is the head of big activities like this one that are SUPPOSED TO HELP PUERTO RICAN ARTISTS. But I shouldn't be surprised to encounter elitist mindsets such as that one. Surely, it won't be the last time.

Tomorrow I'm due at his office to present him with my work and my arguement. So guys, please do not hesitate at all to comment towards this rant. With the majority of all of you being artists, I need to know if I'm totally in the wrong about "high-quality printing" and selling them as "art".

POWAH TO DA PPL.

Adieu, 2008

Hours late, but here it is. A farewell survey to a year that brought on many changes, all of them for the better. Here's hoping that 2009 proves to exceed my expectations, as well. :]

describe 2008 with 3 words:
Life-changing, thrilling, surprising

which concerts did you visit in 2008?
None. ALMOST went to see Heart. :>

where do you live now?
Puerto Rico since August, but I will soon be doing the nomad thang and will transfer my latin bum to AUS.

what happened on your birthday?
Came to Puerto Rico, got moneyz as present, e-flirted with a sweet, hairy man who's now my boyfriend. Very mellow day, couldn't ask for more.

what was your favorite moment in 2008?
May 5th. Day I went to pick up Sheldon at the airport at 10:30 pm. <3

which one was your favorite month?
May was beyond epic. Hands down, most favorite.

most influential people in 2008?
Sheldon, Dustin D, Monica, Greg Manchess, possibly all of the faculty at the Academy, people I got to speak with at the Comic-Con, and definitely a few of the crew (Aslan+Silent+Jorge) at the ad agency I worked at.

do you regret something?
Wasting my time fretting so much about my health.

did your life change in 2008?
I'd say a 180 degrees.

did you find a new job?
Found it, left it, and now I'm making a good amount freelancing.

are you happy that 2008 is over soon?
Yes, and 09 has never looked so FYNE. Oh ho ho!

have you already made plans for traveling in 2009 - and if yes, where to?
Australia, possibly New Zealand, San Diego, Puerto Rico, and hopefully Vancouver too. My wallet seems non-existent in the near future.

best book you read in 2008?
Graphic Artist's Guild Pricing and Ethical Guidelines. A MUST FOR ALL ARTISTS OF ALL INDUSTRIES.

best film you saw in 2008?
Forgetting Sarah Marshall was the most surprising one. I didn't expect AT ALL to laugh so much watching that film.

oh yeah. and WALL-E.

5 Musicians you listened to in 2008 too much!
Peter Gabriel
Mecano
Sting and the Police
Daft Punk
Smashing Pumpkins

what were you doing at new years eve last year at 23.59?
Passed out on a couch and was woken up to fireworks and extremely loud merengue music.

how are you gonna celebrate new years this year?
Attempted to dance with Sheldon, had another chest flair up (fucking humidity), passed out on him, woke up to the screams of my relatives wanted to sing karaoke.

At least the screams to music are a constant year by year.

what are you looking forward to in 2009?
Above all things, to be 100% healthy and happy. Spend more time with Sheldon and make m0ar money just doing my art.

what do you want to change in 2009?
Be more established in the illustration biz, and POSITIVE. Like a unicorn prancing over the rainbow.

what are you NOT looking forward to in 2009?
Sheldon leaving for Melbourne in two weeks :<

are you planning on having any kids in 2009?
YES. A WHOLE HAIRY LOT.

HAHAHA.

yeah, no. not for while.

One Picture From every Month :

JANUARY:

FEBRUARY:

MARCH:

APRIL:

MAY:

JUNE:

JULY:

AUGUST:

SEPTEMBER:

OCTOBER:

NOVEMBER:

DECEMBER:

I'm it!

1. What time did you get up this morning? 10 am

2. Diamonds or pearls? hoohooohaaha, a pearl necklace!

3. What was the last film you saw at the cinema? Since I had time to kill while waiting for Sheldon's plane to land, I went to see Twilight, to see if it deserved the heavy negative criticism that I've heard a lot of. Needless to say, I walked out of the theater halfway through the movie.

4. What is your favorite TV show? Nip/Tuck, and the ever elusive, The Soup.

5. What are you afraid of? Being alone.

49. Salty or sweet? sweet

50. How many keys on your key ring? Three.

51. Favorite day of the week? Don't really have a fixed favorite weekday.

52. If you can choose your talent, what would it be? Hm. Possibly having any musical talent.

53. Do you make friends easily? It's odd. I don't in Puerto Rico. Everywhere else, yes.

that's all folks. anyone else who wants to do the same, go ahead and c+p.

Moving on up

Things are finally looking up. I'm flying up to Chicago this Tuesday, I snatched a deal with a t-shirt company called Resist Apparel to make 6 t-shirt designs that they'll be putting onto their apparel, and I've got plenty of concepts and project ideas to carry out. No word on any stable 9-5 employment opportunity that I've applied to, but I suppose that's fine for now if I want to fulfill a couple of goals and maintain my nomad spirit.

Oooh. And work on a snazzier site. *nod nod*

Although, in the meantime, one can always settle for the efficiency of Carbonmade. :>

Check out my main portfolio site if you haven't already!

http://niklopez.carbonmade.com

balls to the wall

In precisely three weeks, I should be back in Puerto Rico. Tonite there's a gallery opening at the Hotel Normandie in old San Juan with two of my cut-outs present. In a most diva fashion, I won't be able to be make it since I'm chained to my desk for the next 14 days. Working on thesis. On final projects. On various portfolios. HOWEVER! My Ouija board piece did manage to sneak into the Best of Ringling show, which happens next week.

I will need to redo and replace a bunch of portfolio pieces over the next couple of months, but for now I should have a good display of my work to show some agencies in Puerto Rico. It's certainly a start, something to fall back on just in case New York City/Chicago/San Diego/anywhere else in Cali doesn't flow.

Um. What else. Ooh. Heh...hehehehehe...

comes to me on the fifth of May and I am already biting my fingernails up to the cuticle in total anxiety and excitement. Hurhur. *blush*

After the commencement of a rollercoaster ride of a summer, we're flying to new york city in late may (for job opportunities, and to spend time with my MA, Ms. Tory Powell), Illustration Academy in June (whilst the boy is in Chi-town), and then in mid-July is the epic cross-country roadtrip to reach the Comic-Con. On the way there, though, I might get interviewed by the people at ReelFX in Dallas, and after Comic-con, just MAYBE i might see what happens with Nickelodeon. Hopefully by the beginning of August I'll have the semester plan clearly worked out.

But for now, I'm just gonna lean back, sip on a margarita, and enjoy the ride. Mmmmmmmmmm-fucking-hmmmmm!!!

Heads up to all

Figured I'd tell you guys first before I go about spreading the news on campus...but with graduation approaching so quickly, I have a couple of things that I need to sell off.

Currently, I own:

, along with a dvd player. I got the TV at more or less 130$$, but including the DVD player, I'm selling it at 45$. Not a bad fucking deal, considering they are both in supreme condition.

Then there's my microwave . Original price is 119$, now at 40$. A+ conditions.

: Barely used. Mint conditions. Was $146, now 50$.

Then there's my old laptop, my powerbook G4. It works just fine, HOWEVER, the bitch has to stay plugged whenever it's to be used or else it shortcircuits and the sky begins to weep tears of blood and misery. It's got some scratches and bumps on the side, too, but other than that nothing else...Which is why i'm selling it at 400$. I'll even throw in copies of some Adobe products to compensate for the cons. I'll take some actual picture for whoever means serious BIZNISS in buying this computer, and from there on we'll see what happens, yeah?

ALSO:

CD/DVD rolling stand. I'll leave that one at 25$.
A ratan night stand/drawer. I'll leave that one at 30$, for its aesthetic appeal. And of course, and most importantly, its functionality. Hurrr.

For more 411 on any of the products listed above (and yes, i'm willing to work out on a better price if I love you enough), email me at niclopz@gmail.com. Sounds good? Awesome. Now BUY SUMTHIN.

x0

My boss and all the kids that are currently working there didn't get hurt, thank the heavens above (and the glory of weekends), but nonetheless, there were some casualties.

Sad, and scary, when shit like this happens semi-close to home.

One thing's for certain: you can count on me to look up next time I walk around the busy streets of Manhattan.

Although, who knows...

With my supreme attention span, that might just lead to me becoming the roadkill of the day.

fiestaaaaaaaa....
