But is it "Art"???
Jan. 13th, 2009 | 04:57 pm
Hey all.
So here's the deali-o. Early this morning, I called the Institute of Puerto Rican Art & Culture. I wanted to register myself for the upcoming Fiestas de las Calles de San SebastiƔn, possibly the biggest festival to be celebrated in the island where artisans gather and sell their works, musicians play their jams, drunkards do their thing, etc, etc. I myself have always enjoyed going to see what other artists are doing and, of course, supporting the industry by buying a visual treat.
I had the pleasure of speaking with a fellow painter who happened to be the Director for all artists participating in this event. He told me that the main plaza was all booked up, and I told him I wouldn't mind squeezing into a corner since what I had left was a limited collection of works that I wanted to profit from.
The man asked what would I be selling and I told him "a couple of pastel drawings, few paintings, and a series of high quality prints". I think a bit of his vomit went through the phone line as I mentioned that last bit.."high quality prints".
"High quality prints??"
"Yes, Sir. 'GicleƩ' prints"
He scoffed, "Prints are an insult to artists everywhere".
...
....
.....
......
.......

You can more or less imagine my shock after hearing him be genuinely insulted by the idea of prints. The man basically believes in ONLY having originals to sell at x amount of money (and I assure you, not an affordable price at all), WITHOUT prints of whatever original you might have sold that could have been liked by others who couldn't afford said original piece.
So...posters, digital art, all that shit doesn't merit respect in the art world? Well pardon me but that just seems like a big pile of megasaur BULLSHIT.
Prints are an excellent way to reach the WHOLE market. Young people starting to take an interest in the arts who may not have the monetary convenience as others can purchase your art. IT'S A GREAT WAY TO MARKET YOUR WORK AND YOURSELF.
And second, IT'S A FESTIVAL. Not a high-end gallery in, say, New York City.
It really got me to the core. It's a very unjust mentality coming from someone who is the head of big activities like this one that are SUPPOSED TO HELP PUERTO RICAN ARTISTS. But I shouldn't be surprised to encounter elitist mindsets such as that one. Surely, it won't be the last time.
Tomorrow I'm due at his office to present him with my work and my arguement. So guys, please do not hesitate at all to comment towards this rant. With the majority of all of you being artists, I need to know if I'm totally in the wrong about "high-quality printing" and selling them as "art".

Adieu, 2008
Jan. 2nd, 2009 | 12:00 am
Hours late, but here it is. A farewell survey to a year that brought on many changes, all of them for the better. Here's hoping that 2009 proves to exceed my expectations, as well. :]

Moving on up
Aug. 17th, 2008 | 11:32 am
location: still puerto rico :T
music: erasure
Things are finally looking up. I'm flying up to Chicago this Tuesday, I snatched a deal with a t-shirt company called Resist Apparel to make 6 t-shirt designs that they'll be putting onto their apparel, and I've got plenty of concepts and project ideas to carry out. No word on any stable 9-5 employment opportunity that I've applied to, but I suppose that's fine for now if I want to fulfill a couple of goals and maintain my nomad spirit.
Oooh. And work on a snazzier site. *nod nod*
Although, in the meantime, one can always settle for the efficiency of Carbonmade. :>
Check out my main portfolio site if you haven't already!

Sadly, for me, it's gonna become it's most evident in days, weeks, and probably months to come.
